One of the first things I do when I arrive to a new city is research local Coffee Shops.
Over the years it has become in some ways like a measuring tool for me. How good is the coffee, how cool is the space, and is it easy or difficult to find specialty coffee shops that take their coffee serious.
Coffee is part of the culture (think Italians with their by-the-counter espressos and Americans with their unlimited-coffee diners), thus observing local coffee shops (at least to me) gives an insight and a taste of the local culture.
Just a few google searches left me very intrigued, and after saving a handful of places to my favorites, I was excited to try them out, one at a time.
Cape Town really impressed me!
Starting from Truth Coffee - voted the World's best coffee shop two years in a row,
to Our Local, green oasis/urban jungle that serves delicious coffee and simple, perfectly cooked breakfast.
In my “Cape Town Guide” I already mentioned – it’s a city favored by Europeans - and most of them spend afternoons working from coffee shops. "Like a flock of birds – Europeans escaping winter are perched at the tables, on their laptops, freshly tanned, drinking ice-late."
Cape Town coffee-shop culture definitely leaves a lasting impression!
Without further ado, here are the best coffee shops in Cape Town
Truth Coffee Roasting
"taste the joy of extraordinary"
As the name suggests, Truth is a coffee company with strong and transparent beliefs. The company thrives to challenge convention and mediocrity endeavouring to provide the very best coffee, which can be enjoyed in inspired surroundings.
This steampunk-inspired, 19th-century artisan coffee roastery in an old warehouse in City Centre. The design focuses around a cast iron vintage roaster drum; the cast iron gives off radiant and convective heat making for a stronger flavoured coffee than other coffees brewed in the more common steel drums introduced in the seventies, and it is this attention to detail that is key to this coffee joint.
Truth is all about single-origin coffees, handpicked by the coffee-obsessed founder of Truth, David Donde.
"Imagine the perfect brunch in your botanist best friend's greenhouse"
The moment you step in Our Local you are overwhelmed with how uniquely and creatively this place is decorated.
Hanging plants, pot plants, pom pom grass, vases, pots, and antique furniture that all have a price tag for anyone looking to take a piece of this green space home with them.
It is the perfect brunch spot, that serves not only great coffee, but delicious and very reasonably priced brunch.
I could never have enough of this place.
"You are only as good as your last cup"
A few locations in the city serving simple coffee perfection. Unlike previously mentioned, this place has very little emphasis on the design, and there is no food menu. This place is kept mostly to the locals, who appreciate high quality coffee.
Have you ever been to a coffee shop in a church ?
A hidden gem, and possibly the most unique location for your morning or
late afternoon coffee.
Have a nice chat with barista, and take in the church ambience.
Very unique and unforgettable coffee experience!
Bootlegger
"If Batman visited Cape Town, we know where he'd get his morning brew. Heroes need caffeine, too, and Bootlegger Coffee Company is coming to the rescue."
Bootlegger has multiple locations around Cape Town, and surprisingly they have maintained very good quality for their coffee as well as breakfast and lunch menu.
Locals are very loyal to this place, trusting that Bootlegger will serve best quality espresso, that will get the energized through the day.
